Art Chat with Dylan Martinez

September 21st, 2023
Doors open at 5pm
Martinez Glassworks
411 W Steuben St, Cook, WA 98605

The White Salmon Arts Council is thrilled to announce our next Art Chatwith glass artist Dylan Martinez at his studio in Bingen, WA, September 21stat 5:30 pm. Art Chats provide a unique opportunity to converse with regional artists in a casual and intimate setting. WSAC members can attend for free, and non-members pay $10 at the door.

Dylan Martinez challenges the conventional boundaries of his medium. His virtuosic glass sculptures enlist light and space to create works that playfully challenge the audience’s notions of perception. Martinez’s themes include trompe l’oeil renderings of plastic bags, seemingly filled with water and occasionally populated by fish. His most recent glass series are renditions of Pac-Man ghosts, the iconic 80’s videogame character, captured in their fluid, animated state.

In the spring of 2023 Martinez established his own workshop in Bingen, WA. His work has been featured in numerous global publications including Elle Decoration UK, American Craft Magazine and Aesthetica Magazine. His work can be found in public and private collections around the world.

Art Chat with Joanna Kaufman at Moon Mtn Hwy

May 25th, 5:30-7:30pm
MoonMountain Highway
113 W Steuben St.
Bingen, WA 98605

The White Salmon Arts Council is thrilled to host our next Art Chat, with artist and writer Joanna Kaufman May 25th, 5:30-7:30pm at MoonMountain Highway in Bingen, WA. The White Salmon Arts Council’s Art Chats provide a unique opportunity to converse with northwest artists in a casual and intimate setting. WSAC members can attend for free and non-members pay $10 at the door.

Trout Lake artist Joanna Kaufman’s paintings and illustrations are manifested in books, prints, and as original artworks. Her gouache and watercolor renderings capture the delicate luminescent forms of moths, beetles and other winged insects, highlighting the connection between beauty and impermanence. Kaufman also creates whimsical illustrations of animals personified, an owl strumming a harp, or mice dancing arm in arm. She received an MFA in creative writing from the Pacific Northwest College of Art and her interest in narration is imbued in these works.

Kaufman is also an educator and has worked as a teacher of second-language acquisition and as an arts teacher for both children and adults. She has collaborated on the text and illustration of thirteen story books. Her artwork can be found in the public collections of the City of Portland, Oregon, and the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. In 2022 she was the recipient of an Alumni Fellowship from Pacific Northwest College of Art, Willamette University.

Art Chat with Dan Attoe at Society Hotel

Picture
Art Chat with Dan Attoe
April 20th, 5:30-7:30pm
Society Hotel
210 Cedar St.
Bingen, WA 98605

The White Salmon Arts Council is thrilled to host our next Art Chat, with artist Dan Attoe. April 20th, 5:30-7:30pm at the gymnasium at the Society Hotel in Bingen, WA. During the event wine and beer will be available for purchase in the hotel. Art Chat provides the Gorge community a unique opportunity to converse with northwest artists in a casual and intimate setting.

Dan Attoe’s work spans painting, drawing and neon sculptures. His luminous, jewel like paintings depict monumental western landscapes, sparsely populated by miniature figures that appear detached from their surrounding grandeur. On closer viewing these works often reveal miniature text emanating from the protagonists; a stream of consciousness that reflects their human fallibility and longings in ways both profound and absurd. Attoe, an avid meditator, recognizes the persistent nature of our inner dialog and the way in which this human condition hampers our ability to be present, even when surrounded by immense beauty.

Attoe has a daily drawing practice that typically places greater emphasis on the characters represented in his populated landscape paintings. He creates one new drawing a day and  retains them for his archive. These constellations of miniature graphite compositions, which he refers to as Accretion Drawings, evoke intimate vignettes that serve as reference material for  paintings.

Dead of Winter, Attoe’s most recent exhibition at The Hole in New York, featured a selection of neon sculptures, a recurring medium in his oeuvre. This body of work pays tribute to his love of the neon beer signs while exploring spiritual and profane themes through a humorous lens.

Dan Attoe lives and works in Washougal, WA, with his wife and daughters. He received his MFA from the University of Iowa, Iowa City. He recently became a licensed tattoo artist and is also an avid writer. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout Europe and North America.

Art Chat with Ted Olsen ::: January 12th, 2023

Picture
Art Chat with Ted Olsen
January 12th, 5:30-7:30
Sustain Home
215 1st St. Hood River OR 97031

The White Salmon Arts Council is thrilled to announce our next Art Chat, with artist Ted Olson, January 12th 5:30-7:30 at Sustain Home in downtown Hood River. Art Chat provides the Gorge community an opportunity to converse with regional artists amongst a curated selection of their work in a casual and intimate setting.

Artist Ted Olson draws inspiration from the vast reaches of the American West. Rugged landscapes serve as a departure point for his luminous, textured oil paintings. Olson’s compositions straddle representation and abstraction and capture both the shifting physical qualities of landscape and the emotions these barren expanses evoke. His works are reminiscent of fellow west coast painter Richard Diebenkorn who similarly cast light and hue as primary protagonists. Olson’s most recent body of work enlists the eastern end of the Columbia River Gorge as his muse, extracting beauty from the rugged oak savannas, open grasslands and basalt buttes that echo the resilience of their inhabitants.

Established in 2006, the White Salmon Arts Council promotes area artists and the arts through educational opportunities and art-inspired programs and events, with the support of our members, our sponsors, and the local business community.

The White Salmon Arts Council is incorporated as a Non-Profit Corporation in the State of Washington and is exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Federal EIN: 06-178127.

Rhinegarten Park ::: Public Art Mural - Sept 13th, 2022

The White Salmon Arts Council is thrilled to host a mural dedication at Rhinegarten Park in White Salmon on Tuesday September 13th at 5:30pm. The dedication will be attended by White Salmon Mayor Marla Keethler and artists Sally Gilchrist and Molly Holmlund. The event is free and open to the public.

Local artist Sally Gilchrist striking black and white composition wraps the entirety of Rhinegarten  Park’s bathroom facility and depicts a cornucopia of produce. The mural was inspired by White Salmon’s seasonal Farmer’s Market which takes place in the park. The execution of the mural was overseen by artist Molly Holmlund. Both Holmlund and Gilchrist spent countless hours to complete the intricate composition with the help of students and local volunteers.

The mural was made possible thanks to the collaborative efforts of the White Salmon Arts Council, The City of White Salmon’s Community Development Committee, and generous volunteers.

Art Chat with Julie Beeler ::: April 28th, 2022

The White Salmon Arts Council is thrilled to announce our spring Art Chat, with artist, designer and educator Julie Beeler, April 28th 5:30-7:30pm at The Garage in Bingen, WA. Art Chat is a lecture series that celebrates the work of Pacific Northwest artists.

For many artists, the creative process is confined to the studio. Julie Beeler negates these boundaries; her studio is the boundless natural world. The genesis of her work unfolds on treks in the Cascade Range or digging in the dirt on her organic flower farm. Beeler’s layered textile compositions incorporate natural dyes derived from these pursuits, teasing hues from foraged mushrooms and her own cultivated flowers and plants. The artworks’ earthen palette is furnished with botanical prints, stitching and embroidery. The resulting compositions evoke landscapes, both visible and veiled and recalls Alan Watts’ observation that “We do not “come into” this world; we come out of it, as leaves from a tree.” Beeler’s oeuvre does more than reflect her forested surroundings, it enlists the natural world as collaborator and compass to create portraits of time.

Beeler’s infectious curiosity extends to her passion for “educating others on how plants, fungi and their colors reflect the beauty of nature.” She hosts natural dye workshops at her flower farm Bloom & Dye in Trout Lake, WA, and most recently launched The Mushroom Color Atlas, an evolving open-source index for natural dyes derived from fungi. The Mushroom Color Atlas is the first of its kind and serves as a resource and reference for those curious about producing their own mushroom dyes. It is Beeler’s hope that the Atlas will spur stewardship and inspire others “to learn more about the mycological world, and begin to understand the importance of the networks, connections and symbiotic relationships that live in our forests.” The website was recently nominated for a Webby Award.

Art Chat with Chris Pothier ::: March 31st, 2022

Picture
Picture
Picture
I feel that my main responsibility, as an artist, is to be true to myself and to make images that are honest and involve my thoughts completely without pretense or segmentation. I seek to tell my stories as I can only do, not to make images in an attempt to please others or to garner favors. I want to leave this world knowing that in my lifetime, I didn’t leave anything on the table or regret any creative decision. As for the viewers and lovers of art, I want you to know that it is my attempt to make a connection, however large or small that may be, that drives me to keep creating more and more.
My stories come from my dreams, thoughts and interpretations of the world around me. The dreams that I have are vivid, strange and symbolic. The thoughts that I have flow like waterfalls… I have trouble controlling them. I am also highly affected by the state of mankind and the human experience in general; a subject that I am extremely passionate about. These thoughts are documented and eventually used as subjects of my paintings.

Please join us for an exciting night with Chris!

Art Chat ~ Artist Jen Smith

Wildlife Artist Jen Smith-Lewis will Talk About Her Work

The White Salmon Arts Council is pleased to host an Art Chat with Stevenson artist Jen Smith  February 6th at Le Doubblé Troubblé Wine Co. in downtown White Salmon. The event will open at 5:30  with a no-host bar and hors d’oeuvres. Jen Smith’s lecture will begin at 6pm. The event is free for White Salmon Arts Council members and $10 for non-members.

Art Chats provide an opportunity to connect with regional artists in an informal setting. This iteration will enable the community to experience a selection of Jen’s wildlife compositions in person while gaining first hand insight into her journey as an artist documenting the American West.

Jen Smith spent her childhood in northern Wyoming, just east of Yellowstone National Park. Her family’s rural locale required self-reliance and as a result they grew and hunted most of their own food. This hunter gatherer upbringing deeply informs her artwork which combines keen observation of the natural world with her own singular voice. Smith’s studio is littered with stones, tree limbs, feathers and bones that she collects on walks in the Columbia River Gorge. These objects often serve as references for her vivid charcoal compositions.  Animals such as wolves, buffalo, deer and ravens are also consistent subjects of her drawings. These works capture the animals’ likeness, the textures of their fur and feathers, and the luminous gaze of their eyes, to provide a portal into the natural world.

Jen Smith received her Bachelors of Fine Arts at Montana State University. Her work has been exhibited across the country. This fall Smith’s work will be included in Western Visions, an annual exhibition and fundraiser that highlights the top wildlife artists in the country at The National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Art Chat ~ Macramé Artist Kristine Pollard

Macramé Artist Kristine Pollard
Please join us for a presentation by Kristine Pollard, renowned Gorge macramé artist.
Kristine will talk about her passion for her craft and the way she has built her practice and following, one beautiful piece at a time.

Macramé Artist Kristine Pollard Will Talk About Her Work

The White Salmon Arts Council is thrilled to host an Art Chat with artist Kristine Pollard on November 7th at 5:30 at Le Doubblé Troubblé Wine Co. in downtown White Salmon. There will be a no-host bar and light snacks. Kristine’s presentation will begin at 6:00.

Art Chats provide an opportunity to connect with regional artists in an informal setting. These gatherings invite the community to experience the artists’ work in person while gaining first hand insight into their process and inspiration.

White Salmon artist Kristine Pollard has been making macramé (a textile produced by knotting rope) for 25 years. What began as a friend sharing a knot for jewelry making evolved into elaborate wallhangings, hammocks and swings. Pollard’s work does not rely on chance and improvisation. Her multi-textured pieces are deliberate compositions that are carefully mapped out before they are realized in a painstaking variety of knots. Driven by challenges, Pollard embraces the unknown and the failures that often arise in her production process. She is equally inspired by the Gorge landscape, manifested in her textile creations, and empowering others through her love of teaching. Her work can currently be viewed at M.E. Jewelry Co. & Atelier in White Salmon.

2019 Fall Art Walk

“We believe that art has the power to connect our community and that concept will guide all of
our efforts moving forward,” said Sarah Morton-Erasmus, President of the White Salmon Arts
Council (WSAC) at a recent gathering.
Embracing the concept of “Art Connects Community”, WSAC invites you to attend the Fall
2019 Art Walk. Taking place over the weekend of October 18,19, & 20th - this year’s art walk
explores the ways in which art connects us. This event makes art accessible to all viewers with
window displays, free events and participatory projects.
Included in the festivities will be the work of 400+ White Salmon public school students. In a
gallery-style walk along Jewett and Main, this work will be displayed in windows both inside and
out. WSAC members worked closely with teachers, asking students to respond to a simple
prompt, “what do you love about your community?”. Council members visited classrooms and
inspired students to respond in personal ways to the culture, landscape and people that make
up this special place. Local establishments generously donated their storefront windows to
display the work of our youngest artists in a way that celebrates this budding creativity.
In addition to the Children’s Gallery Walk, professional artists from our community will have their
work displayed in local establishments along Jewett, Main and Estes. Many of these display
locations will have small opening events on Friday evening October 18. Check out WSAC
Facebook page or posters around town for a list of artists and locations.
On Saturday, October 19th between 10:00 and 4:00 our town will be alive with engaging
activities including a pizza box painting contest, the chance to work on a giant macramé
creation with artist Kristine Pollard or the opportunity to reflect on our connection to others by
joining artist Cyndi Strid in her compelling “Red Chair Project”.

Everything is happening up and down our main street as well as Estes and Main. Chelsea
Heffner - a WSAC board member says, “Bring the whole family - take in the Children’s Gallery
Walk; check out the amazing work of some of our talented local artists; engage in an interactive
activity; enjoy a meal or a slice or a festive beverage and come help celebrate all the ways in
which Art Connects Community.”

The White Salmon Arts Council is a 501(c)(3) organization focused on building community
through art-focused events and creative educational opportunities. We are supported by our
members and partnership with the local business community. Let’s keep White Salmon
Creative!

The White Salmon Arts Council is delighted to host artist Steven Muñoz. for three weeks during the production of his contribution to the Exquisite Gorge Project, organized by the Maryhill Museum of Art. During his residency WSAC will organize an exhibition of Muñoz’s work at local wine bar Le Doubblé Troubblé Wine Co.  More info can be found at whitesalmonarts.org.

The Exquisite Gorge Project will feature 11 artists, each assigned a section of the Columbia River and its corresponding community. The project is inspired by exquisite corpse, a drawing game invented by the Surrealists in which participants collectively assemble a composition without seeing the previous participant’s contribution. The artists’ individual prints will be unified by their section of the Columbia which will course through each composition and together depict a 220 mile stretch of the river. The project will culminate with the production of a massive 66 foot long steamrolled print at the Maryhill Museum of Art on Saturday August 24th. For more information visit
