7 Artists for 7 Weeks
Gallery Show
June 1 through July 18, 2008
White Salmon Valley Community Library, White Salmon, WA
Reception: Friday, June 13, 2008, 6pm
Music & Refreshments
Seven local artists will join artistic forces for a unique and diverse gallery show at the White Salmon Valley Community Library from June 1 through July 18, 2008. All of the artists are Columbia High School Seniors graduating this June. The public is cordially invited to meet the artists at the gallery reception on Friday, June 13, 2008, at 6:00 p.m. Music will be by 'The Tall Trees' with Desmond Fuller and Bart Plimmer. Refreshments will be provided.
Participating artists are Sera Stanton, Liz Reetz, Erin Holwegner, Nicole Dunn, Fanny Domijan, Amanda Wanner, and Robin Swanhuyser. Although each artist has refined their art for many years, the works featured in the show will be more recent--many completed this year. The seven artists will show works in a wide range of media from jewelry and renaissance costume design to silk-screen and illustration. Stanton, Reetz, Holwegner, Dunn and Domijan will show drawings and paintings including pen & ink, pencil, chalk pastels, oil pastels, water color, acrylic, oil paint, Prismacolor pencils, Prismacolor markers, graphite, and silk screen. Wanner will exhibit a renaissance gown inspired by Raphael’s painting, "Girl with a Unicorn," that she designed and constructed for her Senior Project. Swanhuyser will display one-of-a-kind jewelry in semi-precious stones, silver & beads.
When asked what inspired their art, responses included: the people around them--from great grandmothers to art teachers; ideas--from dreams to theology; and the world around them: from landscapes, to the abstract colors and lines in the natural world. Please join us to celebrate these very talented young artists as they finish up their high school careers and move on to the next exciting phase of their lives. For more information on this event or other library programs and services, call the library 509.493.1132 or visit the Fort Vancouver Regional Library website.

WHITE SALMON ARTS COUNCIL PALETTE PROJECT
Calling All Artists, Artisans, and Craftworkers
November-December 2007
The White Salmon Arts Council has endorsed a new project to develop a pictorial "palette" of the artistic works of the White Salmon Arts Community. The first phase is to compile a Palette collection of photographs (essentially an art community portfolio) representing many artistic works from each of our local artists and our friends of the arts. This Palette will be used to create various slide shows, pamphlets and other display and advertising media to help spread the word about our thriving local arts community.
Our planned initial product will be a digital slide show containing pictures of up to five works from the members who participate in this initial trial effort. Works will always be fully credited to the artist and the photos will not be sold by the Arts Council except by separate agreement with the artist. If this project is successful, we envision the concept can expand to include our local and regional merchants, producers and activities in advertising media to help further promote our town and region as a "destination" hotspot for the arts, activities, vacationing, and shopping.
To make this project succeed we strongly encourage all artists and friends of the arts to offer photos of their works to the Palette. This may include examples from any media (photography, fabric, paint, glass, boat building, writing, etc.) that can be photographically represented. Two White Salmon Arts Council members, Nayland Wilkins (commercial photographer) and Lloyd DeKay (amateur photographer), have conceived and volunteered to develop this project, including collecting and/or taking/editing photos of participating artists' works, creating the initial slide presentation and burning it onto CD/DVD for distribution.
If you are interested and willing to include your works in this Palette Project, please contact:
- Primary - Lloyd DeKay - LDeKay@gorge.net - 509-637-2737
- Secondary - Nayland Wilkins - Nayland@excite.com - 541-993-1660
to arrange to submit your photos or arrange a time to have photos taken of your works. With your strong support we envision having the first sample product ready to be premiered at the January 2008 White Salmon Arts Council meeting.

White Salmon Artist Janet Essley Dedicates Mural
September 21, 2006
"Pizazz," by Janet Essley
Edgemont Junior High School, Puyallup, Washington
White Salmon artist Janet Essley will dedicate her latest mural, "Pizazz," on September 21, 2006, in Puyallup, Washington.
This indoor mural, commissioned by the Washington State Arts Commission, is installed in the central hallway of Edgemont Junior High School. Reflecting the theme, "The Pizazz of Learning," the mural is a complex and colorful array of intersecting pathways with figures emerging from them. Architectural designs on the surrounding walls provide a compositional structure for the mural, with lines and spatial divisions on the wall continuing into the mural space. There, building structure is transformed into pathways looping over and around one another. Figures emerge from and interact with these pathways, engaging in a variety of physical and exploratory activities. The dynamic composition expresses the excitement of the process of learning. The figures are metaphors for different ways that individuals engage in learning, both as observers and as participants. Some figures gather information with their senses, expressing curiosity. Others engage in physical activities, accepting challenges. Still others actively manipulate the pathways to create new forms or elements- showing leadership.
Locally, one can see an example of Janet Essley's murals at the Spring Creek National Fish Hatchery in Underwood.
